The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is an international governing body for a group of professional wrestling promoters and sanctions various championships. The NWA has been in operation since 1948. Prior to the 1960s, it acted as the sole governing body for most of professional wrestling, operating as a talent and brand name franchiser for the territory system.

Giant Baba, who was the first Japanese wrestler to hold the World Heavyweight Title, served as the vice president in the 1980s.

During the working agreement between New Japan and World Championship Wrestling, Sakaguchi Seiji was the NWA president between 1992 and 1993.

Championships

Prior to the 1990s, the NWA board only recognized World Championships in three weight divisions: heavyweight, junior heavyweight and light heavyweight. It also recognized the United States Heavyweight Championship in the early 1960s. The World Junior Heavyweight Title was controlled by Leroy McGuirk of Tulsa, Oklahoma while Light Heavyweight Title has been controlled by the Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre. The member organizations were allowed to recognize their own "NWA" titles except those three world championships.
