The IWGP Heavyweight Championship is the top title in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Although the championship belt has been around since 1983, the championship itself was created in 1987 with New Japan founder Antonio Inoki defeating Masa Saitō in the finals of the annual IWGP Tournament.

As of 2010, there has been four different designs for the championship belts.

The original IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt was introduced in 1983 as a trophy to the winner of the IWGP League, before the official championship was recognized in 1987.
The second version of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt was introduced in 1997 during Hashimoto Shin'ya's historic title reign.
